Question: Can i get fit and lose fat by walking? (Posted by: Anonymous on 2010-01-31 04:48:16) How much would you need to walk (at normal/ fast pace) daily/ every 2 days to get fit? I live nearby a woodland walkway which goes on for several miles and I've been considering using it but would it be effective? Would it result in any fat loss around my upper body as well as my lower body? (My BMI is still below overweight but I do have a bit of a belly, and because I'm 6ft tall it doesn't show as much when I'm standing, but I feel it does when I sit down) |

Posted by: Nick on 2010-01-31, 05:27:15 I studied human biology and physical education throughout my final two years at high school (08 and 09) and walking is found to be one of the best ways to burn fat. this is due to plenty of extra Oxygen which is need to break down fat. The woodland track sounds as if it would be effective based on the fact that you should aim for between 1/ 2 an hour to 1 and 1/ 2 hours per day. |

Posted by: WOW on 2010-01-31, 04:51:21 What a dumb question. Nothing in this world comes to you easily. you have to work hard for it. i suggest you run, jog, and walk . dont just walk. mix it up. Basically, you have to get that heart rate going. So stop sitting on your computer and move your a**!!!!!!!!!!!! |

Posted by: Belle2 on 2010-01-31, 04:54:59 Absolutely! Walking is THE best form of exercise. Do at least 30mins, at least three times a week for good effect. Longer and more often for even better effect. Hope that helps and good for you. :-) |

Posted by: Brooke T on 2010-01-31, 04:55:45 Scientists have discovered that you use the same amount of muscle activity as you do when running- and the amount of calories burnt off whilst doing both is relatively close! The only effective difference is the skin's movement (rather than the muscles)...when running you will find the skin moves more than when you walk, even at a fast pace, THEREFORE running would be beneficial for any cellulite and blood movement in the body :) OH! BY THE WAY..as long as you move your arms while doing any physical activity they can get toned too :) |

Posted by: Mike T on 2010-01-31, 04:57:06 You will lose fat - very very slowly. Your fitness probably won't increase though, as you're not "straining " your cardiovascular system enough to produce results. Step up the walking into gentle jogging over time, then into running longer distances, with periods of sprint and jog to increase recovery times. |

Posted by: rumplestiltskin12357 on 2010-01-31, 04:58:54 1Kg of fat has energy of about 35000Kj (approx 8300 calories). Walking uses about 1200Kj (approx 280 calories) per hour. So walking for one hour will loose about 30 - 40grams. From that you can do the maths on how much walking you need to do. |

Posted by: Crazy Noonga on 2010-01-31, 04:59:34 Most definitely. my mum is in her mid 50's, she walks 5km a day, and does yoga. she's doing well. BMI can be really stupid. someone tall and skinny, it sais there anorexic. i know from a kid in a sporting team of mine. but yes, walking can do yourself a lot of good. It doesn't have to be fast, but at a steady pace, and a decent distance. ALSO running isn't for everyone, so when it gets easier, try walking up stairs, hills, all types of inclines, and invest in a pair of walking weights, or a waist weight, or carry something heavy in a bag. AND REMEMBER, walking is better than sitting on a couch :) good luck :) |
